Jennifer Miller Thurman studied private piano lessons with me at Northwestern College in St. Paul for four years while completing her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance. Jennifer proved to be one of the most gifted students I have had over the 18 years that I have taught at Northwestern. She came in with a magnificent technique, a wonderful ear (she plays many hymns and tunes by ear), and a great personality. Jennifer was always well prepared for lessons, asked many good questions, and quickly developed into a superb musician. Honors included winning the NWC Concerto Competition (Jennifer performed the Mendelssohn Capriccio Brilliante for piano and orchestra with our NWC orchestra), two superb recitals (full junior and senior recitals), as well as being in demand as an accompanist for soloists and ensembles. Jennifer was also sought after as a teacher of piano lessons for our music academy during her time at Northwestern College. In short, I highly recommend her as an accomplished musician and piano instructor. - DR. RICHARD LANGE, HEAD OF THE PIANO DEPARTMENT AT NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE

Our daughter has been taking lessons from Jennifer for five years. Jennifer has a talent for working with students of all ages and abilities. She is able to make learning fun for the younger students, and does a great job of keeping her students engaged and interested as they move up. Jennifer’s work with her improv students is impressive-what talent! Above and beyond her teaching abilities, we are thankful that Jennifer has been a positive role model for our teenage daughter. We would highly recommend Jennifer as a piano instructor for someone of any age. - JEFF AND KATHY WEILER

Jennifer is an awesome teacher! She can be fun and goofy, but keeps me focused on my lesson. She works hard to put together our recitals. Our rock recital was rockin’! She is a special person and I am grateful to have her as my piano teacher. - LYDIA WEILER, age 13

I have known Jenn for the past 6 and a half years not just as a piano teacher but a mentor and a friend. She has pushed and encouraged me to be the best I can be. This past year I performed a senior recital which I thought I never would be able to do, but with Jenn helping me, my finished product really showed me off and I was very pleased with my performance. I have always looked up to Jenn, when I first began with her I can remember that I wanted to be able to play the piano like she did, now I'm heading off to college with 2 scholarships from piano alone. Having Jenn as my teacher has really prepared me for what's in store for college, I'm ready, I don't think I would be without being confidant with piano. I wish I could still have my Wednesday night lessons with Jenn, I've had 3 piano teachers in all the 10 years I've played and Jenn is by far the best of those, she really knows what she's doing. (I'm going to miss her) - AMANDA PATCHEN, age 18

Jenn continues to inspire me not only in music, but also in my personal life, career, and aspirations. - KERSTIN REHAK, age 17

Jenn is a GREAT piano teacher. She knows how to keep her students dedicated and interested in piano in many ways. Unlike other piano teachers she also is interested in what other accomplishments her students have made in their lives. All in all Jenn is a caring and motivating teacher that I am grateful to learn from. - MADELINE GOODELL, age 14

Why do I teach music?

Not because I expect you to play or sing music all your life . . . Not because I expect you to be a professional musician . . .
But . . . so you will be human,
. . . so you will recognize beauty,
. . . so you will be sensitive,
. . . so you will be able to bring joy to others
. . . so you will find personal fulfillment
. . . so you may bring out something in yourself that you didn’t even know was there
. . . so you will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness
. . . in short, more LIFE!
